Heritage & Period Decorating
Sympathetic decorating for period, listed and character homes — breathable, careful and correct.
Older homes were built to breathe, and decorating them well means understanding that. We work sympathetically with period and listed properties — using breathable, often lime-friendly finishes, restoring rather than smothering original mouldings, cornicing and panelling, and choosing heritage colours and traditional materials that suit the age of the house. It is patient, careful work, and it is some of the most rewarding decorating we do.

Heritage Decorating — your questions answered
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Still unsure? Give us a call — we are happy to help.
Can you decorate a listed or conservation-area home?
Yes — it is something we genuinely enjoy. We work sympathetically with period, listed and conservation-area properties, using breathable finishes, traditional techniques and heritage colours, and taking great care of original features such as cornicing, panelling and sash windows. We are happy to discuss any conservation requirements specific to your property.
Why do older homes need breathable paint?
Older, solid-wall homes were built to let moisture move in and out of the structure. Sealing them with modern non-breathable paints can trap damp, causing paint to blister and plaster to deteriorate. We use breathable, often lime-friendly systems on period properties so the walls can behave as they were designed to.
Do you work with heritage colour palettes?
Yes. We regularly work with Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Edward Bulmer heritage ranges, and we can help you choose period-appropriate schemes that suit the age and character of your home. As a Dulux Select Decorator we can also colour-match almost any shade you have in mind.
